About

Biindigen. Tawâw. Tunngasugit. Pee-piihtikweek. Iyskin. Wa’twanonhwerá. Bienvenue. Welcome.

Together as academics, legal professionals, Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies, we work on education related to Indigenous child protection in Kanata, Canada, Turtle Island.

Indigenous children are vastly overrepresented in the child welfare system. The enactment of An Act Respecting First Nation, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families recognizes the inherent rights of Indigenous peoples over their children. As Nations draft laws, there is increased need for legal professionals, community members, parents, kincare providers, and social service agencies to understand both colonial and Indigenous laws regarding child protection. Our goal is to provide meaningful, accessible, and actionable education and resources to those working and existing in this field.

We are grateful to the Law Foundation of Ontario for funding this project, which is a collaboration between academics and Indigenous Services Department at Legal Aid Ontario. We were inspired by collaborations in Treaty 6, the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan. More information about our work and our team is available here.
